Similar to this on the subject of Rushdie's defense and response to the controversy and issue of the fatwa, I found a poem that Rushdie wrote in September of 1989 while in his first few months of hiding. It is titled "6 March 1989."

It is interesting to note the language he uses in this poem and how it is extremely similar to that of "The Satanic Verses" with his use of Indian words and phrases amongst the English.
